The Dallas Morning News
The Dallas Morning News has interviewed Dr. Johannes Kuiper, a cardiologist on the medical staff at BHVH and BUMC, and his patient Sandy Gaddis to follow up on her progress since the removal of her LVAD approximately one year ago. (Her story appeared on the front page of the DMN in December 2007.) Four months after the LVAD explantation, Mrs. Gaddis' medical team determined her heart was too weak to recover (following multiple hospitalizations and infections) and proceeded to list her for transplantation. The heart transplant subsequently occurred in July 2008 and Mrs. Gaddis has returned to good health.

"North Texas Doctors Use World's Smallest Heart Pump"
NBC5 anchor/reporter Brian Curtis has interviewed Dr. Robert Stoler, an interventional cardiologist on staff at Baylor Hamilton Heart and Vascular Hospital, about a new device that may allow select patients avoid open heart surgery and have their heart repaired in the cath lab. Dr. Stoler implanted an Impella device, which acts as a small mechanical heart, prior to beginning extensive stent placement. The device ensured that the heart continued to pump blood through the heart, similar to a way a by-pass (heart/lung) machine is used during open heart surgery.
